San Francisco California, 2019
Chase Center, the new 18,000-plus seat sports and entertainment complex located in Mission Bay in San Francisco will host nearly 200 events a year including Golden State Warriors basketball games, concerts, family shows and more. Sports & The Arts worked with the Warriors to create an art collection which bridged the early Warriors history from Philadelphia to San Francisco to Oakland, and back to San Francisco again.
Three public artworks were commissioned by Sports & The Arts, the first of which include a series of six cast bronze medallions embedded in the esplanade of Thrive City, an exterior pathway and retail area at Chase Center. These medallions highlight the team’s six retired numbers.
The second artwork is the stunning, “Pathways” by Bay Area artist Adam Feibelman. This 70 foot long cut steel installation traces the movement and beauty of the basketball as it travels, second by second, from the inbounding to the all-important basket. Twelve classic Warriors plays were mapped and meticulously drawn first onto paper, then hand-stenciled, traced and die-cut from stainless steel. Each circle represents the path of the basketball as it moves through the play, with spacing in proportion with the speed and trajectory of the ball. The use of color-shifting paint creates movement, as the multiple layers of the metal create depth. The inclusion of LED lighting allows the artwork to be visible day and night.
The third public artwork, “The Bay” was designed and installed on-site by Precita Eyes Muralists. The tile and mirror mosaic celebrates the people, symbols, and landmarks that represent the dynamic identity of the Bay Area. This artwork is meant to define and connect the community through a visual story about togetherness and the celebration of life in the Bay Area.
Over eighty original artworks and 250 photographs comprise the art collection, complemented by several thousand square feet of custom-designed wall graphics and artwork reproductions, several of which are visible in general admission and public areas.
The Chase Center Art Collection was sponsored by Adobe, who played an active role in the Collection. Leveraging corporate partnerships, the Warriors were able to collaborate with a natural partner in the Bay Area culminating in an exciting, vibrant and wide-ranging collection.
